In December 1971, during a long discussion between the participants
(students of sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Prof.
Oskar Hansen, and other contributors) at the Young Creative Workshop a
suggestion was put forward by Przemysław Kwiek, to move the discussion
from the smoke-filled room and into the open air, and replace words with
artistic materials. Prof. Hansen then developed this idea, and
introduced strict rules to the planned action. The participants were
divided into two groups: Whites and Blacks, with a documenting group
also designated. The next day the discussion group participants went up a
hill near the city, and once they had arrived, they were to take part
in a sort of ‘combat’, or, ‘arts maneuver’. When one group performed a movement, the second group looked at this and after a time, had to
respond. Wooden sticks approximately 1.5 m long, white canvas about 12 m
long and approximately 1 m wide, and red fabric could be used in this
game. Within three hours fourteen movements were constructed.
