Known for his innovative hybrid works that emerge from the fusion of chiaroscuro-painted canvases and video projections, Dominik Lejman has truly created a unique visual language.

Lejman’s Reenactment series (2022), draws inspiration on 19th century mental hospitals and how their patients were photographed and posed. With evident themes of control, manipulation, and submission to beauty cannons, Reenactment also deals with the distinction between normality and insanity as well as the marginalization of those we judge to be mad. Set within a black void that lends his work a certain baroque quality, his figures often appear like dolls or puppets that remain mosty motionless. Although wearing a robe reminiscent of a straightjacket, Lejman’s model Bianca O’Brien could also echo certain religious icons.
